VICTIMS' SERVICES OFFICE MAY CLOSE

An area agency that offers services to abuse victims may be forced to shut down its office in Emporium. A spokesman for Citizens Against Physical, Sexual and Emotional Abuse said there may be no other choice as a result of an anticipated $22,000 cut in federal funds.

A sighting last week confirmed that the rare eastern spiny softshell turtle that has been known to be living in the Stevenson Dam reservoir is still alive and well. For a dam so rich in aquatic diversity, it's rare for one turtle to get so much attention. But this isn't your average turtle.

Biologists are expecting a banner year for forest-wrecking caterpillars, which can be found wrapped in webbing in thousands of area trees this month. At this point, the eastern tent caterpillar appears to be the main villain in northcentral Pennsylvania.

A Portage man suffered a facial injury in a fiery collision Tuesday morning on Railroad Street in Austin. State police said Donald Bento, 52, was traveling north at 6:40 when his sedan went off the road and struck a utility pole and then the Austin Borough police cruiser, a 2007 Dodge Durango. Bento's car continued for another 50 feet before coming to rest. Bento walked to a nearby house and was treated initially by Emergency Medical Technician Peg Rotello and Police Chief Kyle Day. He was later taken by Austin Ambulance to Cole Memorial Hospital. The investigation by state police from the Denton Hill barracks is continuing.

Deadbeat dads (and moms) get little tolerance in Cameron and Potter counties. Statistics issued by the Pa. Dept. of Public Welfare show that Cameron County led the state in percentage of child support collected during 2007. Potter County ranked eighth statewide.

Forestry Bureau photo Replacement of the bridge over Five Mile Creek, along Pa. Rt. 46 in Cameron County, is progressing. It's the only access for three camps on property leased by the state, as well as Five Mile Road. That road provided access for the Civilian Conservation Corps Building from May 1935 to October 1937. CCC buildings were removed in the 1980s. Coleman Construction won the bid to replace the bridge. Access to the site is limited to construction vehicles only.

Mr. and Mrs. Edward L. Easton of Coudersport observed their 50th wedding anniversary on Saturday. Edward L. Easton and Caroline Gaberseck were married on May 10, 1958. Mr. Easton is well-known for his many years of service as a district justice, as well as his role as a sportscaster, program host, and news director at Radio Station WFRM.

Attorney Robert W. Kuhl has opened a law practice in Coudersport. His office is at 30 East Second Street, above the former Coudersport Insuring office. Kuhl formerly served as Potter County public defender and as staff counsel for A Way Out, the domestic violence support organization. He also spent five years as law clerk for the Potter County Court of Common Pleas.

An Emporium teenager is being held in the Potter County Jail, awaiting action in Cameron County Court on a number of charges. Matthew Cash Grimone, 19, was jailed on Friday after allegedly violating the terms of bail spelled out by District Judge Alvin Brown.

CSD: NO TAX INCREASE, BROWN RETIRES, NUFFER NEXT?

During one of the more eventful meetings in recent history, school board members Monday night approved an operating budget, decided to postpone start-up of a preschool program and learned that one of Pennsylvania's most respected vocational agriculture teachers is retiring.

Last Saturday, Frank "Louie" Baker and his assistant, Calvin Pifer, presented a hands-on workshop on the traditional skill of gold panning to members of Austin Brownie Troop 911, Cub Pack 524 and Boy Scout Troop 524. Baker, a member of the Bald Eagle Chapter of the Gold Prospectors Association of America (GPAA), demonstrated gold panning techniques then assisted the scouts as they panned for their own gold. Each child had a chance to try their luck at panning while their parents looked on. All materials were provided by the GPAA, including soil samples containing small amounts of gold. Brownie Troop leaders Chrissy Stuckey and Carey Pifer, Cub Pack Cub Master Scott Hostetlar, and Boy Scout Master Tom Hurd were all on hand to assist with activities. Copper wire pilfered KANE - Another theft of copper wiring is under investigation by state police from the Kane barracks. Troopers say somebody entered private property at the site of a Verizon Wireless tower and made off with approximately 100 feet of copperclad wire. To gain access, the thieves cut a wire fence owned by a security company.

WORK TO GET UNDER WAY AT EMPORIUM SENIOR CENTER

Improvements are coming to the Emporium Senior Center on South Maple Street. Cameron County Commissioners last week awarded the contract to Solveson Contracting of Emporium for $15,843. Work is expected to start June 1. Solveson will install new steps, build a roof over the steps and one of the center's ramps, as well as upgrade the bathroom and electrical system.

Community can help with wall mural

A public participation event is scheduled for Saturday at the courthouse square in Coudersport to support the Community Mural Project. 'Poppy Day' set for Friday

Austin School Board passes budget with no tax increase

Residents of Austin Area School District will see no real estate tax increase for the 2008-09 school year, despite increased expenses for utilities, teachers' salaries and other budget line items. School board members unanimously approved the operating budget at this month's meeting. It calls for just over $3.31 million in expenditures.

Dickinson gets $50,000 grant

Drunk driver flees A Potter County man is facing numerous charges after leading state police on a highspeed chase last week. According to troopers, 40- year-old Sean R. Easton of Genesee was clocked at 73 miles per hour in a 35-mph zone. When they attempted to stop him, police said, Easton accelerated while heading south on Rt. 449.

Dog obedience classes to start

Richnafsky casts his spell at Woodland bee

Austin Area School has announced its honor roll for the third marking period of the 2008-09 school year. Those earning high honors maintained an average of at least 93 percent in all subjects. Honor roll students had at least an 85 in all subjects.

Tire collection day May 31

Lumer Museum sets yard sale

A Potter County man is in satisfactory condition at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, N.Y., today after an oil drilling accident Wednesday afternoon. Police report that a heavy drill fell on Alan Wackwitz, 23, of Shinglehouse at a work site in Whitesville, N.Y., pinning him against some pipes.

Coudersport soccer team up to 2-0

Coudersport boosted its early season record to 2-0 in local soccer among Under-19 teams with a 6-0 whitewash of Port Allegany. Tim Thomas led the charges with three early goals. He followed that hat trick with assists to Devin Matzinger and Ty Carts to make it 5-0. Wes Bernard drilled in a head shot to close out the scoring.

Coudersport Falcons host softball playoffs Monday

Even with an impressive 13- 5 record, the Coudersport Falcons are considered long shots in the field of a dozen contenders. Austin improved its record to 5-0 in Potter-McKean Little League softball Tuesday with a 14-1 win at Otto Township. Hannah Glover pitched a no-hitter, striking out nine, she also cracked four hits and drove in eight runs. Jesse Riedmiller and Cheyenne Kio had three hits apiece.

Modern-day marvels can confuse older people and I guess today is one of those days for me. This contraption with a screen and a keyboard doesn't do the things I ask it to do. There are some emails that I would like to read, but when I try to see it everything comes up except the message. Maybe they will send it again and I will learn what lurks behind this screen.
