About Norfolk Southern Norfolk Southern is a Virginia-based holding company headquartered in Norfolk. It owns a major freight railroad, Norfolk Southern Railway Company, which operates approximately 21,600 miles of track in 22 states the District of Columbia and province of Ontario, Canada. Norfolk Southern's network includes lines formerly operated by Conrail, which is jointly owned by Norfolk Southern and rival CSX. Norfolk Southern transports coal and general merchandise, including automotive products and chemicals.
