Norfolk Southern is a Virginia-based holding company headquartered in Norfolk. It owns a major freight railroad, Norfolk Southern Railway Company, which operates approximately 21,600 miles of track in 22 states the District of Columbia and province of Ontario, Canada.

Norfolk Southern's network includes lines formerly operated by Conrail, which is jointly owned by Norfolk Southern and rival CSX. Norfolk Southern transports coal and general merchandise, including automotive products and chemicals. The company also offers intermodal services (freight transportation by a combination of train and truck) through subsidiaries Triple Crown Services and Thoroughbred Direct Intermodal Services.

Norfolk Southern ranks no. 270 on this year's list of the Fortune 500, with $8.5 billion in revenues, up 16.6 percent from the previous year. The Norfolk, Va.-based company was ranked no. 286 on the 2005 list. Its 2005 profits were $1.28 billion, up 38.8 percent from a year earlier.
