Veterans Benefits Available

Applications for the Pennsylvania Merchant Marine World War II Veterans Bonus Program are now available from and are being accepted at the Cameron, McKean and Potter County Veterans Affairs Offices.

Applications must be submitted by Dec. 31, 2006, and must be made in person, or if the veteran's health or competency prevents a personal application, through a representative such as an attorney authorized by the Adjutant General.

Once applications have been submitted, they will be reviewed and the $500 bonus payment will be made to the applicant by next summer.

To be eligible for the bonus, an applicant must meet certain criteria:

Be a U.S. Merchant Marine veteran who served on active duty, including training, between Dec. 7, 1941, and Aug. 15, 1945.

Be in possession of a DD Form 214 evidencing honorable service.

Be a legal resident in Pennsylvania on April 12, 2006, when the enabling legislation was made effective.
