Sgt. Howard J. McDonald, son of Howard and Debbie McDonald formerly of Emporium, received the purple heart during ceremonies held recently in Arizona. Sgt. McDonald was wounded Sept. 5, 2005 in Iraq. That's Howard and his father in the top photo and the governor of Arizona, Janet Napolitano presenting McDonald the award in the bottom photo. The younger Mcdonald lived in Emporium until he was 12. Now living in Arizona with his wife Amanda, Sgt. McDonald has four children. He is the grandson of the Howard and Shirley McDonald of Sylvan Heights.
