Werner Ekes Out Hutton Memorial Win

Steve Werner
Steve Werner of St. Marys held off a stiff challenge down the stretch to win the first David Hutton Memorial 5K Run Saturday in Emporium.

Werner covered the course in 17 minutes, 48 seconds, followed closely by Travis Faulkner (17:52). Those two ran away from the field early on and pushed each other down the stretch.

Race Director Lynn Newcomer said the race will become an annual event to benefit the David Hutton Track Scholarship. That's a memorial to Hutton, an active runner who lost his life as the result of injuries suffered in an auto accident last September.

Newcomer said the annual financial award will go to the Cameron County High School senior who is a member of the school's track and field team and demonstrates academic achievement.

Each racer and participant in the accompanying two-mile walk paid at least $12 to participate. Area merchants supported the David Hutton Memorial by donating items given out as door prizes.

Some 68 participants, including 35 runners, lined up at the Cameron County High School starting line.

Young Ali Mertsock of Shinglehouse was the first overall female finisher (22:21).

"We're very thankful to the many volunteers and sponsors who made the first David Hutton Memorial such a success," Newcomer said. "Thanks also to the Fire Police and the Emporium Borough for managing the streets and traffic during the race and walk."
