Too Many Geese At Sinnemahoning Park

There are so many geese in and around Sinnemahoning

State Park that hunters are being encouraged to intervene.

Sections of the park are open to hunters starting Tuesday, Sept. 5, and continuing through the state's early goose-hunting season, which ends Sept. 25.

"Goose populations have increased drastically in recent years, causing nuisance problems," said Park

Manager Lisa Bainey. "Visitors often complain about goose excrement on the beach and other facilities, and water quality can be adversely affected."

Hunters who would like to know more about the situation should contact the park office at 486-8401.

Several state parks have been invaded by goose overpopulation. Park managers have allowed grass to grow in high goose density areas to deter grazing. They've also installed fencing and used noisemakers to deter waterfowl.

The Pa. Game Commission and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service authorized the early goose season, which carries a daily bag limit of eight.
