Boys' Team 2-1 In Golf Action

Senior John Guisto fired a team-best round of 46 to lead the Cameron County Red Raiders to a pair of wins in the high school golf opener Monday afternoon on the local course.

One of the region's top linksters, Chris Sabolcik, led Port Allegany into Emporium for a three-way match that also involved Austin.

Sabolcik didn't disappoint, shooting a medalist round of 40, but the Red Raiders were still able to edge the Gators, 28- 27.

The Raiders beat Austin 29 1/2 to 25 1/2.

Backing Guisto's 46 were sophomore Josh Strahl (48), senior Nick Guisto (49), freshman Grant Vassallo (50) and senior Ryan Bainey (56). That quintet and senior Jon Lundberg comprise coach Tom Glosek's squad this season.

Austin got of 48 from Zach Jeffers and rounds of 49 from Beau Hooftallen and Dan McKeirnan. Desiree Lamer (54) and Chip Sinnamond (55) rounded out the Panthers' scorers.

On Wednesday afternoon back on the local course, John Guisto fired a strong round of 43, but the Oswayo Valley Green Wave had too much for the Raiders and came away with a 29-26 triumph. Following Guisto were Strahl (47), Vassallo (48), Nick Guisto (50) and Lundberg (51).

Zach Tarbell shot a medal round of 40 for the winners.

Coach Glosek expects many close matches to come.

"There are a few top golfers, but by and large the Penn-York League should have a very close season," he said. "Several teams are quite evenly matched."

Cameron County returns to action Tuesday on the road against Smethport and Otto- Eldred.
