Angel Food Ministry Still Going Strong

The Cameron County Christian Center is still offering the Angel Food Ministry to anyone who wants to save money on food.

The Christian Center began its ministry nearly years ago and has provided thousands of boxes of food to area residents.

Angel Food's groceries are sold in a quantity that can fit into a medium-sized box at $25 per box. Each month's menu is different than the previous month and consists of both fresh and frozen items with an average retail value of approximately $50. Comparison shopping has been done across the country in various communities using a wide range of retail grocery stores and has resulted in the same food items costing from between $42 and $78.

Generally, one unit of food assists in feeding a family of four for about one week or a single senior citizen for almost a month. There are no secondhand items, no damaged or outdates goods, no dented cans without labels, no day-old breads and no over-ripe produce.

Also offered are specialty boxes such as steaks, chicken and pork. Additionally, there is no limit to the number of units or bonus foods an individual can purchase, and there are no applications to complete or qualifications to which participants must adhere. Angel Food Ministries also participates in the U.S. Food Stamp Program, using the Off-line Food Stamp Voucher system.

The Christian Center is given $1 per box sold which helps with fuel and trucking costs involved in bringing this ministry to the area.

The menu for September food box includes the following items: 5 lb. popcorn chicken, 4 oz. diced pears, 2 lb. salisbury steak entree, dozen eggs, 8 oz. corn muffin mix, 1.5 lb. st. louis ribs, 2 lb. french fries, 3 lb. fully-cooked frying chicken, 16 oz. snap peas, 12 oz. philly portions, 7.5 oz. mac and cheese, 2 lb. boneless skinless chicken breast, 8 oz. peanut butter, 1 lb. pinto beans, Pillsbury dunkables, 1 lb. sliced deli turkey and 14 oz. smoked sausage.

If you purchase one of the food boxes above for $25 then you are entitled to order as many "specials" as you like. Those include Steak combo box (4) 8-oz. T-bone Steaks (4) 8-oz. New York Strip Steaks $18

10 lb. Chicken tender box $18

Griller beef box (4) 8-oz. Pure Beef Patties, (2) 6-oz. sirloin steaks, (2) 8-oz. new york strip steaks and (4) 8-oz. beef back ribs.

If you would like to try a box of food, stop down to the Christian center and pick up a menu.

Also, if you are elderly or are shut in and cannot get out to pick up your food box, we will deliver it.
