Genealogy Research Library Coming To Emporium

A genealogical research library could be up and running in Cameron County as early as next year.

The Cameron County Historical Society plans to renovate the former Wenzel Appliance Store on Greenwood Street in Emporium into a "first class" research hub. It would cater to people looking for books, census records, newspapers and other records.

The Emporium Foundation has provided a donation and other funding sources are being explored.

"Waiting will be difficult," said Cameron County Genealogy Club leader Wendy Davis. "But the result will be worth the wait."

The Historical Society purchased the building a year ago. Genealogy Club began the work with clean-up and repairs.

Society leaders plan to continue the repairs. Security measures and a rest room are also planned, as well as sewer and water service, new lighting, wiring, air conditioning and dehumidifying.

Also, bookcases and shelving will be added. Other possible renovations include work on the building facade, signs and a new roof.

Once the building is ready, the organization has targeted one room for family records, microfilm readers and desktop computers. Another would include storage and a kitchen. Artifacts would be stored upstairs.

Contractors for the work include Kevin Jack Construction of Driftwood, as well as A.J. Kautz & Son Plumbing, Heating and Air Conditioning of Emporium.

"Once completed, this will be an asset to the community and for those who are researching the area," said Cameron County Historical Society Director Mike Wennin.
