Cameron County's varsity football season started last Friday in Brockway with the Raiders beating up the defending District 9 Class AA champion Rovers, 34-6.
Playing tin a steady drizzle for most of the night, the Raiders used a 27- point second half to pull away.
Brockway scored first after a Nick Malize fumble recovered by Anthony Varischetti. Six plays later, Dillon Park found the endzone on a three-yard burst up the middle. The conversion attempt failed.
The Raider offense was trying to find its rhythm in the wet conditions while the defense was keeping the Rovers out of the end zone. Danger lurked when Danny Slottje's punt was blocked, allowing the hosts to set up inside the Raider ten-yard line, but the defense held.
Cameron County broke the ice after the Rovers fumbled on their own 38. Quarterback Jordan Crane hit split end Sean McManigle for a 22-yard pass and John Malizia scored on the next play with a 16-yard jaunt. Slottje's kick gave the Raiders a 7-6 lead.
That slim margin held, as the Raiders batted down a pass in their endzone on the last play before the half.
Coach Tony Defilippi's boys turned things around after the intermission. With less than two minutes elapsed, Crane threw a beautiful touch pass to Abram Zoschg, who got behind the Brockway corner and raced in for a touchdown.
Crane remained hot, as he hit his fullback, Malize, with a short dump-off pass and the fullback raced the rest of the way for a 36-yard score. Slottje's kick made it 20-6.
Zoschg displayed more of his speed with a 53-yard touchdown run that put the game away. With just over three minutes remaining, Cameron Clingan added a 29-yard touchdown run. Slottje made both extra points.
The Raiders ran for 251 yards, led by Cash Grimone with 78 yards on 12 carries, Zoschg 60 on four tries, and Malizia's 40 yards. Completing four of nine passes, Crane threw for 117 yards and two touchdowns.
