Guided Elk Tours Taking Place At Park Sinnemahoning State Park continues to offer weekend elk-watching tours through Oct. 14. The Pennsylvania elk population numbers more than 600. However, due to the expanded range of the herd and the species' growing wildness, elk-watching can be hit or miss. After a short presentation at the park on the species and its habitat, tourists can travel out into the elk range with guides. The elk are especially active during the next few weeks, as males experience the "rut" and aggressively pursue females, often sounding their trademark bugling sound. Advance registration is required for the guided elk tours, which cost $30 per family group with one week's notice. Visitors may have to drive their personal vehicles to the viewing sites. Contact the park office at (814) 647-8401 to register or obtain more information. Sinnemahoning State Park is located along Rt. 872, eight miles north of the Rt. 120 junction in Sinnemahoning. |
