Volleyball Team Opens 1-1

A much improved Austin team sent Cameron County down to defeat Tuesday night in the Northern Tier High School Volleyball League opener at Austin, 25-21, 25-20, 25-15.

The Red Raiders were coming off a non-league win at Galeton last Saturday night, but ran into a Panthers crew that was anxious to make a statement in the NTL.

Sonni Gordnier led Austin with a combination of five kills, a pair of digs and 12 service points, including two aces. Melissa Sinnamond also played a solid match, recording 15 assists and a dozen points, with five aces.

Julia Glosek dished out 19 assists for the Red Raiders, while recording six digs and seven service points. Jessica Ellenberger returned after a year off to score 10 points (two aces), with five kills and six digs. Karen Kesterholt was all over the floor, credited with 20 digs, two blocks and a kill.

In the season opener on Saturday, Kesterholt had five blocks, 11 service points and a pair of kills to lead the Red Raiders to a three-game sweep at Galeton, 25-23, 25-12 and 25-23.

Glosek had nine points with a pair of aces and three blocks. Erica Stewart recorded three kills and seven service points.
