County Fair Improvements Could Be Coming In 2007

Rides, attractions and more vendors could be in the Cameron County Fair's future.

Earlier this week, the fair association board of directors met to brainstorm ideas for next year's fair.

The absence of rides has cut down on turnout, directors believe. Carnival rides were discontinued due in part to rising insurance costs and the fair itself was cancelled for a year. Directors are committed to reviving the fair. They believe children and adults are most attracted by carnival rides, bingo and refreshments.

Board members discussed fund-raising alternatives and solicitations. The possibility of charging an admission fee was discussed, but no decisions were reached.

Directors hope to reorganize some of the stage entertainment, possibly spreading the lip-sync contest over two nights. A karaoke contest would be held on a separate night.

Other changes already moving forward. The former game room is being converted into a food stand. The roof on another concession stand will be repaired. Improvements are also coming to Beaver Hall. Bathrooms are being remodeled as part of one student's senior project.

Four new board members were elected at this week's meeting: Kent Davis, Alex Davis, Wendy Davis and Dave
