Expo' In High Gear Today The Pennsylvania Elk Expo concludes on Saturday with a jam-packed schedule of events at the fairgrounds at Kersey. The Elk Education Center will be open all day. It features the "Pennsylvania Great Elk" display, showing bulls killed by hunters since elk-hunting resumed in the state several years ago. Also located at the center will be elk hides, skulls and antlers; educational information on the elk herd and displays on conserving, preserving and enhancing wildlife habitat; elk antler crowns, tattoos, coloring books, balloons and stickers; and a 2:00 p.m. slide presentation by elk expert Carol Mulvihill, entitled "Elk Through the Seasons." Among the other Elk Expo highlights today: 9:00 to 7:00- Chainsaw Carving Demo, where pine logs are turned into bear, elk and whimsical creatures. 9:00 to 3:00- Archery shoot. Participants should bring their own bow. 9:00 to 7:00- The NRA's Great American Hunters Tour, an extraordinary assembly of antlers depicting some of the highest-scoring whitetails in the world. 10- Deer Habitat Management, featuring Steve Trupe covering planting food plots and habitat management for deer and other species. 11- Rusty Snyder, operator of Double Diamond Deer Ranch in Cook Forest, will present a seminar on deer. Noon- Freddie McKnight, with seminars on predator hunting (scouting, equipment, scents, calls, landowner relations, and more) and deer hunting "hot spots." 1- Dave Ehrig, "Mr. Black Powder," with how-to information on flintlock rifles, hunting tactics, clothing and ethics. 2- Alex Vedrinski, champion turkey caller, will demonstrate voice, mouth and call methods. 3- Elk Calling Contest, where contestants vie for trophies and cash prizes using their voices and hand-held or breath operated devices. |
