Cameron County's junior high football team took to the road Thursday evening for a hard-fought battle with the Falcons of Coudersport.
The Raiders escaped with a 14-6 win to improve their record to 4-0, heading into next Thursday night's home game against Port Allegany (6:00).
Coudersport played ball control early on, limiting the Red Raiders to just three offensive plays in the first quarter. After being turned away by a goal-line stand, the Falcons broke the ice on a fourth-down pass play to carry a 6-0 lead into halftime.
But Coudersport's placekicker slipped on the kickoff to start the second half and barely connected with the ball.
Cameron County capitalized on the excellent field position with a 40-yard drive that ended on fullback Brett Malize's 15-yard touchdown run. Malize also carried for the two-point conversion, making it 8-6.
A big hit by blitzing linebacker Andrew Fragale
forced a Falcon punt and the Raiders struck again. Malize scampered around right end for 30 yards and quarterback Jason Blose plowed into the end zone from one yard out, giving the visitors a 14-6 advantage.
Later, Cameron County nearly put the game on ice
when a pass from Blose to Andy Lippert carried inside the Falcon 10. The hosts' defense stiffened and Coudersport embarked on potential gametying drive.
Malize had other ideas, intercepting a pass near midfield to seal the victory.
