Burning Issue
Outdoor Furnaces Still Not Ignited

Borough Council hasn't yet approved the use of outside wood- and coal-burning furnaces in Emporium.

At its monthly meeting this week, Council tabled a vote on the measure to lift the ban on the furnaces, pending further investigation.

Some residents are anxious to install the furnaces as an alternative to natural gas or electrical heating systems in the home. However, Borough Manager Rob Aversa told Council he has also heard opposition to relaxation of the current standards from residents who are worried about odor and soot.

Council banned the installation of outside furnaces in 2001, but earlier this year started work on a new ordinance that would allow them, if they meet emissions standards.

In other action, Council:

--was notified by Zito Media that monthly rates for that company's "Classic Cable" programming package will rise by $1.70, effective Nov. 1.

--heard a presentation from Max Narby, who is seeking support for the erection of a Korean War and Vietnam War Museum at the Big Flag Memorial (see story at upper left).

--learned that the street paving work has been completed. Cost overruns of about 16 percent will be negotiated.

--was notified that GKN's $5,000 donation will cover most of the cost of new fire hose and related equipment being purchased by the Emporium Volunteer Fire Department.
