Plans Being Made For A Youth Hunt For Ringnecks

Plans are in place for a Salt Run Youth Hunt for ringnecked pheasants, a joint project of Bucktail Rod and Gun Club and Deer Park Lumber. The first hunt is set for Saturday, Oct. 28.

A mandatory safety training session will be held Sunday, Oct. 22, at the Andrews Farm - - near the mouth of Salt Run -- to prepare for the annual pheasant hunt for anyone age 12 to 16.

Registration is due by Oct. 20 at 486-1054, or 486-3363 evenings. Youngsters will experience shooting at clay pigeons on both their safety instruction day and the day of their hunt. Refreshments will be provided both days, compliments of the Cabin Kitchen.

If sufficient interest is shown, there is a possibility that some hunts could be scheduled on Sundays for chukar partridge.

The number of hunts to be held hinges on the availability of experienced bird dogs and their handlers to assist. Wayne Kingsley from Emporium has volunteered the services of his German short-haired pointer, Maggie. Bird hunters from the Waynesburg and Tunkhannock areas have also responded to the call for help. Others who would like to offer their services should call 486-3363.

Hunting slots are being filled on a first-come, first-served basis. There is no fee. A current Pennsylvania hunting license is required for all participants.
