'Flu Clinics' Being Planned

Flu shots will be given during upcoming clinics in Emporium, Driftwood and several other communities.

There will be a special emphasis on immunizing individuals who may be at high risk for serious flu complications.

Schedule is as follows:

--Tuesday, Oct. 24, Elk County Medical Associates office, 275 E. Fourth St., 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.

--Tuesday, Oct. 31, Driftwood Senior Center, 10:00 a.m. to noon.

--Tuesday, Oct. 31, Emporium Senior Center, 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

--Wednesday, Nov. 1, Elk County Medical Associates office, 275 E. Fourth St., 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Several physicians' offices will also provide shots as part of the regional campaign.

The project to inoculate as many area residents as possible is being spearheaded by the new Flu Coalition, made up of doctors, nurses and other professionals affiliated with Elk Regional Health Systems.

Individuals who are covered by Medicare Part B will receive shots free of charge. Others will be charged $20. The Flu Coalition is unable to file health insurance claims covering the cost of flu shots, so residents whose shots may be covered by insurance are advised to seek inoculation from a physician.

Unlike last year, no delays in vaccine production are expected.

Upwards of 20 percent of the U.S. population gets the flu at least once a year. It's a contagious respiratory illness caused by viruses. Influenza can cause mild to severe illness, including fatalities.

Older people, young children and people with certain health conditions are at higher risk.

The flu viruses are often spread by coughing and sneezing, though sometimes people become infected by touching something with flu viruses on it and then touching their mouth or nose. "Flu season" begins in October and lasts as late as May. The peak is usually between December and early March.
