Tax Study Commission In Place

Cameron County Area School District has its Tax Study Commission in place.

Each public school district is required to name a commission of local citizens to study the impact of changes in the tax structure on local economics.

Among the changes in the works is a reduced reliance on real estate taxes, and a reciprocal increase in income taxes -- either earned income or personal income -- to finance school district expenses.

Appointed to the Cameron County Tax Study Commission were Chris Umble, Betty Allen, Ron Aversa, Catherine Harpster and Peggy Vail.

All five commission members attended an organizational meeting on Wednesday night. Aversa was named chairman.

Next commission meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 24, at the high school conference room. The meetings are open to the public.

The organization will report its non-binding recommendations to the Cameron County Area Board of Education.
