The Pa. Game Commission estimates that there are about 650 elk in Pennsylvania, the only free-roaming elk herd east of the Mississippi River. Peggy Coppolo of Bennett's Valley had her camera handy when she spotted these two wapiti in the water. The elk herd will be trimmed by roughly three dozen during the week of Nov. 6-11, when the Game Commission holds its next organized hunt. Forty hunters were drawn for elk-hunting licenses from more than 50,000 applications.
