The Pa. Game Commission estimates that there are about 650 elk in Pennsylvania, the only free-roaming elk herd east of the Mississippi River. The elk herd will be trimmed by roughly three dozen during the week of Nov. 6-11, when the Game Commission holds its next organized hunt. Forty hunters were drawn for elk-hunting licenses from more than 50,000 applications.
