Volleyball Team Faces NTL Elite

Cameron County went up against two of the area's best high school volleyball teams this week and came away from that learning experience with some admiration.

On Thursday night, leagueleading Coudersport came on strong down the stretch after a fairly even matchup earlier in the night to polish off a 25-16, 25-20, 25-9 sweep.

"The Falcons have a good, solid team," said Raider coach Amy Schwab. "They play well."

Julia Glosek continued her steady play with 34 assists, to go with six digs and three kills. Jessica Ellenberger was credited with 10 digs, two kills and served for five points, with three aces.

In other Thursday night action, Austin gave Northern Potter a tough time before falling in four games during that battle of Panthers. Whitney Crosby had 13 kills and two service points for Austin, while teammate Sonni Gordnier delivered six service points with an ace, five kills and a block. Casey Boucher served for 11 points. Kelsey Valenti had three kills and five points.

On Tuesday, Oswayo Valley bounced back from its twogame losing streak to defeat the stubborn Red Raiders, 25-18, 28-26, 25-16. Glosek had five kills for CCHS.

Austin swept Smethport in three, 25-12, 25-19, 25-20. Melissa Sinnamond had a strong all-around game with 23 assists, two kills, a block, a dig and 17 service points, including three aces. Kelsi Valenti served for 11 points, with four aces. Whitney Crosby recorded 11 kills, two blocks and four digs, while serving for seven points. RaynaValenti had seven kills, three blocks, a dig and six points.

Playoff time is nearing as the Northern Tier League season winds down. Next Tuesday, the Red Raiders travel to Otto- Eldred while Austin has a home match with Port Allegany. On Thursday, Coach Loretta Lininger brings her Smethport Hubbers to Emporium. The Raiders are also registered for next Saturday's Elk County Catholic Tournament.
