'Wind farm' proposed
ULYSSES -- Northcentral Pennsylvania's wood, coal, oil and gas have been exploited for energy generation. Now the focus is turning to the region's wind.
AES, a Virginia-based company, wants to erect approximately 75 windpowered turbines in the Ulysses area of northern Potter County to generate electricity.
The company presently has leased about 13,000 acres from private landowners in Ulysses and Hector townships and is seeking various government approvals for the plan.
Some area residents have expressed concern that that windmills, which can be more than 400 feet tall, may mar the beauty of the countryside, thus lowering property values.
Adelphia update
COUDERSPORT - Employees of Adelphia Communications Corp. still on duty in Coudersport, despite the sale of the company's assets to Time Warner and Comcast, know their days are numbered.
The "Adelphia Estate" still employs a Coudersport workforce for post-sale financial and information technology duties, but those are winding down and soon those workers will join the ranks of the unemployed.
Time Warner Cable did pick up the majority of the Adelphia/Coudersport employees when that company took over the former Adelphia properties in the community on Aug. 1. However, a portion of those jobs were described by Time Warner as "transitional" and the workers have no guarantees of long-term employment.
Adelphia plunged into Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2002. Most recently, a U.S. Bankruptcy Court judge set a Nov. 27 deadline for Adelphia creditors to vote on the Chapter 11 reorganization plan, which determines the distribution of billions of dollars paid by Comcast and Time Warner to acquire Adelphia's 5 million customers and other assets.

COUDERSPORT -- Coudersport Mayor Wick Furman announces that the community's Trick or Treat night is Tuesday, Oct. 31, starting at 6:00. Those who would like to offer treats should leave their porch lights on and turn off their lights when they no longer handing out treats.
