Volleyball playoffs next week

Coudersport unseated Oswayo Valley as the Northern Tier Volleyball League champion Thursday night, but the Falcons have little time to rest on their laurels.

Coach Greg Stone's team is among a crowd of 17 schools vying for the PIAA District 9 championship in a playoff tournament that opens Tuesday night.

Among the first-round matchups at 6:30 Tuesday are Otto-Eldred at Coudersport, Austin at Elk County Catholic, Redbank Valley at Oswayo Valley, and Cranberry at Northern Potter.

Winners advance to the D9 quarterfinals on Thursday night.

Junior Jessica Wilson was a standout in Coudersport's critical win in four games at Oswayo Valley. She had 16 kills, 27 digs, six blocks and served for 11 points. Brianna Vought came through with 11 kills, 12 digs and eight points with two aces.

Also on Thursday, Austin built some momentum for the playoffs, winning a five-game thriller at Otto-Eldred. The Panthers took the finale, 15-12. Sonni Gordnier had 17 kills and 19 points, while Melissa Sinnamond dished out 38 assists to go with three kills and 13 points. Whitney Crosby, Rayna Valenti and Kelsey Valenti also posted impressive stats.

Northern Potter closed out the regular season with a threegame sweep of Smethport.

Coudersport 13-1, Northern Potter 12-2, Oswayo Valley 11- 3, Austin 7-7, Otto-Eldred 5-9, Port Allegany 4-10, Cameron County 2-12, Smethport 2-12.
