Fifth graders win tournament

Cameron County captured the championship trophy from the ninth annual Fifth Grade Basketball Tournament at Woodland Elementary School.

Brooke Burfield scored 25 of the team's 47 total points in a trio of wins over St. Marys, Johnsonburg and Kane. Delaney Lewis drew high marks for her ballhandling and passing.

Top rebounders and inside defenders for Cameron County were McKaylan Fry, Erin Purcell, Alisa Duman and Tory Younkin.

Also contributing to the team's success were Capri Clark, Kacie Aversa, Jennie Fragale and Rowan Crisp.

The St. Marys game was a thriller, as the hosts held on for a 12-10 win and limited the opponent to just two points in the second half.

In the finale against Kane, Cameron County broke away late after the teams were tied 14-14 down the stretch.
