Veterans to recall Armistice Nov. 11 will use that solemn occasion as a day off work next Friday, Cameron County veterans will observe the holiday on its rightful date. Floyd Keefer, director of veterans affairs, has announced that a Veterans Day program will be held at the Big Flag Area on Nov. 11 at 10:30 a.m. Veterans groups will dedicate the WWII monument during the service. Veterans Day is the American version of the international day of remembrance called Armistice Day. It falls on the anniversary of the signing of the Armistice that ended World War I. All major hostilities were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918. Congress made it a legal holiday in 1938. The day has since evolved as a time for honoring living veterans who have served in the military during wartime or peacetime, partially to complement Memorial Day, which primarily honors the dead. Keefer said local veterans' groups will also observe Poppy Day on Friday, Nov. 17, at various locations in Emporium from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, contact Keefer at 486-1372. |
