Burglars strike in Portage Twp.
Several camp burglaries on Fox Mountain Road in Portage Township were d i s c o v e r e d
over the
weekend, with
the start of
turkey season.
State police
say thieves broke
a window in a camp owned by James H. Yocom of Douglasville and removed coins from an upstairs bedroom, while causing $25 in damage.
Entry was made through a second story door at a second camp, owned by Thomas Deiterich. Police are still trying to determine if anything was taken. That break-in caused $85 in damage.
Also, a lock was broken on a shed at a third camp, owned by Jerry Alwine of East Berlin, and $50 in currency was taken.
In other police news, charges are pending against a Sinnemahoning woman following a one-vehicle crash last Wednesday morning on Route 6, west of Galeton. Police said driver Hollie Rosen was traveling too fast for conditions when her 2003 PT Cruiser failed to negotiate a curve, traveled off the road, veered back across to the other side, then hit an embankment and rolled over twice. Rosen suffered moderate injuries. A passenger, Sharon Rosen, was slightly injured.
A hit-and-run on Second Street in Emporium on Halloween remains under investigation by state police. Someone driving a dark Jeep Cherokee lost control of the vehicle, which struck a parked pickup truck owned by Thomas Callahan.
Six guns were stolen from a residence in Roulette Township last weekend. State police said the weapons -- four rifles and two handguns -- were taken from a locked gun cabinet at the Sartwell Creek Road residence of Bernard Safford and Virginia Safford.
State police at Denton Hill are investigating a burglary at the new Pa. Pellet plant along Rt. 49 near Ulysses. Sometime between Monday night and Tuesday morning, someone broke into the factory's office and stole a new computer, still in the box, and a backup power system. The items were valued at $800.
Minor injuries were reported in a multiple-car pile up on Route 219 in Lewis Run Friday afternoon. State police said Amanda Crowe of Eldred failed to notice that Bruce Gardner of Mt. Jewett had stopped his passenger van behind a compact car, driven by Paul DiFonzo of Lewis Run. Crowe's car ran into the back of Gardner's van and shoved it into DiFonzo's vehicle. Crowe's car then bounced off a pickup truck parked along the road.
A case of identity theft victimizing an Eldred resident is being investigated by state police at Kane. Sometime over the past couple of weeks, someone used Frances Burrows' Social Security number to obtain a credit card and then used the card to purchase almost $700 worth of items.
A burglary at a Smethport area home last weekend is being probed by state police. Someone entered the residence of Donna Barnish and stole a Play Station II valued at $198; a Kodak EasyShare digital camera also valued at $200, and a video game valued at about $20.
Troopers at Kane are investigating a criminal mischief this summer near Aqua Drive on property owned by Aiken Water Company. Vandals cut a steel messenger support and electric wire to the company's wells from four different poles. Damage is estimated to be $500.
