Publisher's Point Of View
Robert Allan Hooftallen

Amazingly this is the 181st edition of this newspaper.

Compared to most newspapers in the region, we're still awfully young. As a result, we are in a near-constant state of change, looking to find our stride as a successful business and as a meaningful medium for news, advertisement, entertainment and art.

That said, I want to address the concerns we are hearing from our longtime advertisers, subscribers, readers and friends.

The name "Cameron County Endeavor," is a thing of the past. I struggled with the name from the beginning because it implies geographical limitations.

And today I clearly realize what people told me four years ago: Cameron County is too small of a market for two newspapers. They were right and I wonder about its ability to sustain one sometimes.

When this newspaper was started in March 2003, I felt like Cameron County was its best home, mainly because I knew the scene well, having worked in the newspaper business here for nearly six years.

The newspaper has done well and we've had a good run as a Cameron County only newspaper. But, the economics and logistics of the situation have dictated that we always look at ways to position ourselves for the future.

I firmly believe that "multimedia" is the future for all newspapers and that's what we plan for Endeavor News- a multi-media publication.

Multi-media in itself clearly implies a larger reach and consequently a larger audience.

We are opening an office in Coudersport, where we have allies in the business and where we believe there's a need for the services of a forwardthinking print media company.

We are going to continue to do our best to cover the news that matters to our customers in Cameron County, although we recognize that our focus away from an "intensely local" approach here may cause that to suffer some.

We will maintain an office in Emporium for both Endeavor News and for Copy Katz.

As we work through these changes, we will keep our eyes toward morphing our traditional newspaper style with our multi-media ambitions.

The simple goal is to serve a broader audience and that's what's going to continue to drive us.
