Playoff game postponed Coudersport's Falcons overcame some miscues to rally from behind on two occasions, finally rolling to a 32-14 football win over Clarion last Friday. That sets the stage for a rematch with Johnsonburg today at noon (Clarion Univ.), with a berth in the PIAA District 9 title game on the line. Today's winner meets either Curwensville or Redbank Valley next weekend at a neutral site. Strong defense helped Coach Paul Simcoe's troops (11-0) overcome some costly mistakes. Two long touchdown runs by senior tailback Chris Cavallari put the icing on the cake. "It was a great test for our guys tonight," Simcoe said. "When we got down, we showed some character. We needed to see that. Hopefully, this will help us down the road." Aerial assault Clarion capitalized on a botched punt attempt to take a 7-0 lead early in the second quarter. Coudersport answered quickly. Justen Kinder, who alternated at quarterback with Boomer Wetzel, welcomed Sam Decker back to the offense with a 41-yard pass play. Wetzel then hit Logan Hathaway on a perfectly pass play. Kinder drilled a pass to Hathaway for the conversion and an 8-7 lead. A lost fumble late in the second quarter put Clarion in business at the Falcon 18. Isaac Cary and Kirk Duffee snuffed out the threat by sacking quarterback Adam Bevevino for a 15-yard loss. Just after the break, the Bobcats cashed in on another fumble deep in Coudersport territory. Bevevino followed a wall of blockers into the end zone. The PAT made it 14-8. With survival on the line, Coudersport stepped up. Cary's fumble recovery at the Clarion five set up Cavallari's short touchdown run. Cavallari also carried for the two-point conversion and a 16-14 lead. Midway through the fourth quarter, Cavallari broke a couple of tackles and took off on a 61-yard TD run. Wetzel's pass to Blair Heimel for the conversion made it 24-14. Later, Cavallari slipped away from a couple of would-be tacklers scored his fourth touchdown on a 48-yard run. "You can play Chris tough 40 times in a row, but on carry No. 41 he can take it to the house," Simcoe said. "He did it twice." Clarion finished the game with just five first downs, thanks in large part to 10 tackles by freshman Dirk Cowburn, eight by Carin Knight, and seven apiece by Kody Frederick and Drew Levavasseur. |
