Guy and Mary Felt Manor's new assisted living wing will likely be ready for occupancy by mid-2007, according to Administrator Kim Jones.
Exterior work recently completed on the addition complements the facade of the 35-year-old manor. That means workers for the general contractor, Swanson and Sons of Bradford, are under roof in time for the colder weather.
Construction has progressed ahead of schedule, Jones reported.
The new wing will allow Felt Manor to welcome 10 assisted living residents, while expanding the 40-resident capacity of the current skilled care facility. Demographic studies confirm that the population requiring assisted living is underserved and is likely to grow as Cameron County's population ages.
"We're excited about bringing this new service to the area," Jones said. "It will provide a choice for those residents who require a limited amount of care. We'll also be adding some jobs."

Most of the exterior work is done, creating a near-identical match with the existing long-term care home. The new facility could be ready for occupancy in May. |

Jones said the manor has already heard from numerous people interested in moving into the new facility or relocating a family member there.
Each resident will have his or her own bedroom, bathroom and kitchenette. There will be a common dining area and activity center, as well as laundry facilities and other services.
"It's a place of residence that will be independent, but supervised," Jones said.
At the same time, Felt Manor is renovating the nursing home, adding a therapy room, relocating the nurses' station and expanding the dining area. Estimated price tag of the two projects is $3 million.
Architect is Habiterra, the same firm that designed the current structure. Felt Manor Board of Directors has also announced a Donor Tree Fund for the new year. A wall has been set aside to recognize those who make donations or memorials to sustain the manor in its mission of providing skilled nursing, rehabilitation and assisted living care.
