Free tax counseling being offered
      Free tax counseling and preparation for Pennsylvania taxpayers with low and medium income, particularly those 60 and older, is available from AARP tax aides. They will be offering help with personal income tax returns for federal, state, local, and property/rent rebates at the Coudersport and Emporium senior centers.

Scout candy sales begins in March
      Cub Scout Pack 591 of Cameron County is selling Dan Smith Easter Candy until Thursday, March 1. Proceeds will cover the costs of activities such as the Halloween party, Christmas party, Blue and Gold Banquet, swimming, rocketeering, bowling, day camp, summer camp, Klondike Derby and Pinewood Derby. Funds raised will also support awards and supplies.

Rebate applications available
      More Pennsylvanians are now eligible for the state's Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program. A new law increases the income limit from $15,000 to $35,000 for homeowners and boosts the maximum rebate from $500 to $650. Those who apply should deduct half of any Social Security, including Medicare premiums, from other income when determining eligibility.

      A son was born on Jan. 24, 2007, to Larry Shepard and Stephanie White of Emporium. Koby Michael Shepard arrived at Charles Cole Memorial Hospital, weighing eight pounds, six ounces. He joins brothers Bryan, Zane and Nate, and sisters Lakin and Shayna.

      Anyone interested in helping with this year's American Cancer Society Relay for Life is encouraged to contact Bev Stewart at 486-2039 or Vicky Cochran at 598-0277. The relay is scheduled for a 24-hour period that begins at 3:00 on the afternoon of June 15.

Coming together to help 'C.J.'
      Friends and family have come to the assistance of a Cameron County couple whose son is fighting a rare form of cancer. Cameron James "C.J." Lehman, two and one-half year old son of Jim and Lorah Lehman of Rich Valley, has been diagnosed with lymphoblastic lymphoma. Doctors say he will have to undergo upwards of two years of chemotherapy, after which time he could make a full recovery.

      Next meeting of the Alzheimer's Support Group will be held at 6:00 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 14, at 313 S. Chestnut St. in Emporium. The organization offers help and educational support to caregivers coping with the challenges of caring for someone with Alzheimer's Disease. There is no cost.

'Fat Tuesday' slated
      Austin United Methodist Church will celebrate Mardi Gras, or "Fat Tuesday," on Feb. 20, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. The public is encouraged to enjoy a buffet, including tasty desserts, in advance of Ash Wednesday. "Mardi Gras is known by many as an enormous party in New Orleans," said spokesperson Peg Rotello.
