Financial Management Classes Set
      Penn State Cooperative Extension is holding a series of family financial management workshops, entitled "Investing for Your Future," in St. Marys. The six-week workshop series includes a workbook. It will cover a wide variety of investment types and advice on meeting goals, such as college education or retirement funding.

      Cameron County Emergency Medical Services sponsored an intense trauma class for 20 emergency responders from Emporium, Sinnemahoning, Bradford, St. Marys and Johnsonburg. Trauma is the leading cause of death for Americans under the age of 44.

      L arry and Diana Hinrichsen were sunbathing in a remote section of the Delaware Water Gap, minding their own business, when someone rudely intruded on their solitude. That was all it took. The New Jersey couple pulled out a Pennsylvania map, looked for the most remote location they could find and, soon, they were off to explore Potter County.

      Sheetz tax break? ST. MARYS -- Sheetz Inc. is seeking a five-year real estate tax break for its new store, which is being built in downtown St. Marys. City Manager David Greene is recommending that City Council approve the Local Economic Revitalization Tax Assistance application.

Derailment clean-up extended
      Norfolk Southern now has until March 19 to finish removing contaminated soil from the site of last year's train derailment. Heavy rains in early January slowed the work, according to the Pa. Dept. of Environmental Protection.

Development group supports energy plant
      Members of the Quehanna Industrial Development Corp. reaffirmed their support for the electric-generating plant being targeted for the Karthaus area during their recent meeting. President Ray Savel said the group looks forward to groundbreaking. "The residents of the area are getting very excited and hoping construction will start very soon," said Savel.

Numbers in the news
      -1 Americans had a savings rate of negative-one percent in 2006. It was only the fourth time in history that, as a whole, we spent more than we earned. As recently as 1995, the figure was 4.5 percent. In 1980, it was more than 10 percent. Social scientists say that, by and large, Americans have forgotten the lessons of deferred gratification.

     One of the animal oxygen masks recently donated to the Emporium Volunteer Fire Department was pressed into service during an emergency response on Monday. A grease fire filled the residence with smoke. The occupants were able to escape with their dog, but Paulee the cat was nowhere to be found. Eventually, Paulee emerged, barely breathing. Firefighters Laura Narby and Jill Krieg (shown) used the new equipment to administer 15 liters of oxygen. Within about 20 minutes, she had recovered. The masks were provided H.E.L.P. Animals Inc. of Orange City, Fla.
