Local bear kill numbers decline after record '05
      Final Pa. Game Commission figures released last week confirmed a smaller bear kill in Cameron and Potter counties than reported in 2005. Hunters took 70 bruins in Cameron County last year, way down from the 172 mark in 2005. The Potter County figure was 189, slightly off the pace of 214 the previous year.

Guilty pleas in elk-killing case
      Two Emporium men charged with illegally killing an elk last November entered guilty pleas before District Judge Al Brown. Douglas M. Petty, 19, and Eric Reed, 20, decided not to contest the Commonwealth's case against them. Petty will pay $6,500 in fines and restitution for unlawful taking of wildlife. Reed will pay $2,000 for aiding in the unlawful taking.

Outdoor show in Bradford
      Bradford Mall will once again be the setting for the annual Kinzua Outdoor and Travel Show, set for Feb. 23- 24. Sporting goods retailers, fishing charters, recreational vehicle dealers, and travel and tourism destinations have reserved booth space.

Separate coyote hunts next weekend
      Sinnemahoning Sportsmen's Assn. (SSA) will hold its popular Coyote Hunt in an eightcounty area next weekend, Feb. 16-18. Coyotes can be taken by preregistered hunters in Potter, Cameron, McKean, Elk, Centre, Clearfield, Clinton and Tioga counties. Registration is open at the clubhouse in Sinnemahoning on Saturday, Feb. 10, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Entry fee is $6.00.

Hunting, trapping continues
      Winter hunting and trapping opportunities are available for those willing to brave the elements. Hunters may take coyotes with either a general hunting license or a furtaker license, 24-hours a day, including Sundays. Hunters may use electronic calls and can pursue coyotes without wearing fluorescent orange in most instances. Also, trappers can take an unlimited number of coyotes until Feb. 17.

      A Forest Landowners Conference is scheduled Saturday, Feb. 17, in St. Marys at the Red Fern Conference Center. Information will be presented on forest management, harvesting, marketing, forest health, subsurface rights, estate planning, agroforestry and deer management assistance.

Fly-tying classes being planned
      A two-part class will be held to introduce beginners to fundamentals of fly-tying. Students will learn to produce samples of nymphs, streamers, wet flies, and dry flies. This class will take place on Tuesday, Feb. 27, and Tuesday, March 6, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p. m. in Port Allegany. For more information, call 642- 2295 or 274-4877.
