Brown announces candidacy
      Barry D. Brown has announced his candidacy for a seat on the Cameron County Board of Commissioners for the fouryear term that begins in January 2008. His name will appear on the Republican ballot for the May 15 Primary Election.

Sterling Run carving: what is it?
      Many have wondered about the origins of a carving evident on a huge rock in southern Cameron County for more than a century. Upwards of 100 people who turned out at the spring dinner of the Cameron County Historical Society this week to learn about the "mast in stone" at Sterling Run.

Numbers in the news
      60 Sixty percent of Americans identified as "middle class" economically a decade ago say they are worse off today. Eighty percent of today's middle class fear they will be unable to meet basic living expenses in the future. The biggest concerns: insufficient funds for health care, tuition, buying a home and retirement.

      Josh Thomas demonstrated his skateboarding skills during Saturday's Carnival days event in Emporium. It was a time to raise money for the new Emporium Skate Park and raise awareness of the project.

      Va. Tech victim mourned ST. MARYS -- Monday's shooting rampage at Virginia Tech University in Blacksburg, Va., hit home in St. Marys with news that a young man with local connections was among the 32 victims. He was identified as Jeremy Herbstritt, 27. A 1998 graduate of Bellefonte Area High School, Herbstritt was attending Virginia Tech as a graduate student studying civil engineering.

Slate of road work scheduled
      Several well-traveled roads in Potter and Cameron counties will receive maintenance work this spring and summer. Among the projects with the biggest impact is the replacement of the SPC Mike Franklin Bridge on East Second Street in Coudersport. That bridge will likely be shut down in July for upwards of six months.

      Local residents and seasonal home owners should be aware of Cameron County's building and sewage permitting requirements. Building Code Official Russ Braun points out that the state's Uniform Construction Code (UCC) affects all types of construction.

April 28 Leek 'Fezztival' becoming annual tradition
      "Our goal is to start a new tradition based on a Potter County institution." With those words, Coudersport area businessman Ron (Fezz) Linden is promoting the second annual Leek Fezztival, scheduled for Saturday, April 28, at his Mill Creek Plaza. The site is located along Rt. 6 and the Ice Mine Road, between Coudersport and Sweden Valley.

Rockin' good time planned
      Entertainment for the second annual Leek Fezztival will be provided by Coudersport's own songwriter for the stars, Larry Herbstritt, and musical partners Jeff Kazimer and Tom Shaffer. After kicking around a few new names to replace their standard, the Rockaholics, the group recently settled on "Every Tom, Jeff and Larry.
