Bowling season winds down
      Another successful schedule of league competition at Emporium's Mountain View Bowling Center is coming to a close. Fran Vermillion, a consistent high scorer all season long, went out with a bang in the Ram & Ewe Mixed Couples League. She smashed a 614 set that included singles of 232 and 211 in Saturday's finale.

      Junior Brian Wetzel got the win as Coudersport topped Northern Potter in high school baseball. The Falcons (2-1) were due to return to the diamond Friday after a 16-day layoff due to rain, snow, cold weather and wet grounds.

Solveson returning to Somerset
      Emporium's contribution to professional baseball is returning to the Somerset Patriots for the 2007 season. Saul Solveson, a 27-year-old righthanded pitcher, still could catch on with a major league organization this season, but for now he'll take his place in the bullpen of the Patriots, an independent organization in the Atlantic League. Spring training starts next week.

Local golf seasons will be in 'full swing' soon
      Warmer, drier weather will bring out the linksters as the season moves into full swing at the golf clubs in Emporium and Coudersport. Emporium hosts its annual Knights of Columbus Tournament on Sunday, April 29. The VFW Tournament is slated for May 12, with the Memorial Day Mixed Classic scheduled May 28.

Giannotti cracks record books
      Freshman Emily Giannotti ran her way into the record book at Coudersport Area High School Saturday by posting a time of 11:39.5 in the two-mile run during the Mansfield Track & Field Invitational. She shaved more than four seconds off the previous record.

Jones completes first season
      Ryan Jones, a 2006 graduate of Coudersport Area High School, was a member of the men's basketball team at Catholic University of America during the recently completed season. The son of Gary and Linda Jones, he appeared in 18 of the team's 29 games, averaging 2.2 points and 1.2 rebounds per game.

Karli Duffee fires another no hitter
      Sophomore Karli Duffee pitched her second no-hitter of the season in leading Coudersport to a 15-0 high school softball win over visiting Port Allegany Thursday. Duffee had plenty of offensive and defensive support. She struck out three and didn't walk a batter in the four-inning affair.
