      A son was born June 11, 2007, at Charles Cole Memorial Hospital to Carl and Erika Artman Brown of Emporium. The baby weighed seven pounds, four ounces and has been named Ryder Otto Brown. Grandparents are Sam and Kim Artman, George and Judy Brown and Diane Brown, all of Emporium.

     About 130 people turned out for Wednesday night's Community Supper at the Keating Summit United Methodist Church. The next Community Supper will be an "end of summer bash" on Aug. 8. Day care coming to Emporium
      A public, licensed day care center will be opening in Emporium this fall. It will be headquartered at St. Mark Catholic Church and open to children age 13 months and older. Care will be available for full days, half days and before/after school. The center will follow the state's Early Learning Childhood Standards.

'Super Saturday' coming back to Emporium
      An organizational meeting will be held at 7:00 Tuesday night at Memorial Hall for those interested in resurrecting the "Super Saturday" tradition in downtown Emporium. Vendors, businesses, civic groups and clubs are encouraged to attend. Planning must take place immediately, with the festival scheduled for Aug. 18.

Grant writing workshop set
      A workshop to help individuals who are applying for grants will be held Oct. 11-12 in Coudersport. Topics will include locating funding sources, writing needs statements, budgeting, timelines, articulating clear goals, and developing objectives and performance measures.

Hornung named to dean's list
      Corinne N. Hornung, a graduate of Cameron County High School, was named to the dean's list at the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg for the spring 2007 term. The dean's list includes those who have earned an average of at least 3.25 out of a possible 4.0.

      Next meeting of the Cameron County High School Music Boosters will be held at 7:00 p.m. Monday in the high school band room. Members and anyone else interested in the high school music program are welcome. Additional information is available from the group's secretary, Kim Pennington.

     Activities of the new Sylvan Heritage Group were detailed for Emporium Rotary Club members during this week's meeting, held at the First United Methodist Church. Program Chair Dave Guloien had his daughter, Jeanmare Holjencin, and Don Olivett as his guest speakers. Jeanmare chairs Sylvan Heritage, which consists of about 15-20 volunteers working to beautify Emporium and fill empty storefronts with effective displays. She and Olivett narrated a video on the group's recent work day in Emporium. Sylvan Heritage plans to be involved in the Silly Saturday celebration in August and the Fall Festival at Sizerville State Park. Guests at the meeting were Meg Whiting of GKN, Mark Saline of AST, Sally Guloien, Tom Holjencin, and Alex and Marissa Umble. CCHS lists final honor roll
      Cameron County High School has announced its honor roll for the final marking period of the school year. Students received high honors for an average of 93 percent or above. Those on the honor roll had an average of at least 85 percent.

     Fierce winds wreaked havoc at the Emporium Golf Club on June 8, but some determined cleanup work by the grounds crew allowed the St. Mark's Golf Outing to go off without a hitch some 36 hours later. There were 42 linksters on the course, with the foursome of Mike Agliardo, Rick Kahnell, Tom Yothers and Jim Thomas taking first place. The season is running smoothly at the club, where a new fountain and other renovations are well-received.

     Cameron County Little League's carnival was held throughout the week on South Broad Street. The carnival is the Little League's largest fundraiser. Day Camps continue at Austin School
      School's out, but there are still opportunities for learning in Austin. Summer Day Camps are being held at the Austin Area School, sponsored by 4-H. They include workshops, games, and environmental education. Some of the items produced at the camps will be displayed at the Potter County Fair.

Time to register for Summer Reading Club
      Barbara Moscato Brown Memorial Library in Emporium will register students for its Summer Reading Club next week, Monday through Friday. The club is open to students from kindergarten through grade six. Parents or guardians must accompany the child for registration at the library.

Arts group gearing up for fetival
      Cameron County Arts presents its fifth annual Art Fest in downtown Emporium next weekend. More than three dozen tables have been rented for artisans and craftsmen who will be demonstrating, displaying and/ or selling their crafts Saturday on South Broad Street.

No tax hike in Austin school budget
      Members of the Austin Area School Board last week put the finishing touches on the district's operating budget for the 2007-08 school year, which begins on July 1. Despite rising costs, directors were able to avoid an increase in real estate taxes or any other tax. The budget calls for $3.29 million in expenditures.

     Saturday at the Square debuted last weekend in Coudersport with live music, food booths and a variety of vendors. Mary Kelley from "Heal My Sole" displayed her growing variety of organic skin care products. She began her business in 2003 and now markets through festivals and shows in several states, as well as internationally through the Internet.       One of downtown Coudersport's oldest and most community-minded businesses was in the spotlight during Tuesday's annual Chamber of Commerce Awards Banquet, held at the Hotel Crittenden. Buchanan Bros. Pharmacy was recognized as Business of the Year.

      Rattlesnakes will be in the spotlight during Friday night's outdoors presentation at Sizerville State Park. Waterways Conservation Officer Bill Crisp will bring live timber rattlesnakes to the campground amphitheater to present a program at 7:00.
