Bear population thriving
Season starts Monday; hunters should do well
      A thriving black bear population awaits hunters in the region this year. The regular three-day firearms season is Nov. 19-21, the three days before Thanksgiving. "Our bear hunting should be excellent," said Mark Fair, one of the Pa. Game Commission wildlife conservation officers serving the local region.

Woman uses flintlock rifle to harvest cow elk
      The 54-caliber flintlock muzzleloader used by Suzy Stefani of Sigel during the 2007 Pennsylvania elk hunt is just as tall as she is at 4'10". The petite woman with the beaming smile weighs only about 100 pounds, and with her hair in pigtails, she looks to be in her 20's. But, believe it or not, she is 62-years-old and has been hunting for the past 35 years.

Bear hunter success rate: 3%
      Bear season in these parts is no small event. In some counties the number of bear hunters may even surpass that of the deer season opener. Bruin populations have been at very high levels the last several years. With about 20 percent of the state's bears killed each fall, Pennsylvania has been maintaining a bear population of around 15,000.

More than a buck contest!
First Big Woods Whitetail Classic planned
      Endeavor News will team up with members of the Sweden Feedin' Club to sponsor the first Big Woods Whitetail Classic when deer season begins Nov. 26. The outdoor event, which will be held at the Beef & Ale House at the corners of routes 872 and 6 just outside of Coudersport, will feature several harvest competitions, as well as other outdoor attractions.
