The recent settlement with Norfolk Southern over the June 2006 chemical spill has revealed the severity of the damage. On the 11 miles of the Sinnemahoning Portage Creek affected by the spill, there was a complete fish kill: about 368,000 gamefish and baitfish. More ... A steady downpour and dense fog harassed hunters and kept deer harvest figures down on the opening day of the state's two-week rifle deer season. But when conditions improved Tuesday, hunters took some incredible deer. Cody Housler, an Austin hunter, was among those who found success when the weather cleared Tuesday. He shot this 11-point on Cowley Hill at mid-day. The 176-pound buck is still holding down the second place spot in the Big Woods Whitetail Classic contest, which continues through season's end at the Beef & Ale House in Coudersport. Sportsmen who get a buck are encouraged to register their deer, no matter what size it is, for a chance to win prizes in drawings to be held at season's end. To enter your deer, bring it to the check station all day Saturdays or between the hours of 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. during the week. Game officials have joined veterinarians and laboratory technicians in sampling thousands of deer taken by hunters. About 4,250 were checked last year. More ... Just over 2,000 bears will be taken by hunters by the time Pennsylvania's three seasons come to a close on Saturday. That's about 1,000 fewer than the Pa.
