It's over. Cameron County's long 2007 football season ended Saturday afternoon at the hands of the Kane Wolves, 14-6, in a game held to decide both a berth in the Elite Eight of the state playoffs and the PIAA District 9 championship. More ... Four boys who have played basketball together since early elementary school return for their senior year at Coudersport. Head coach Chris Fink has announced that, due to family commitments, he will probably "graduate" at the same time returning starters Derek Burdick, Colton Corey, John Hau and Blair Heimel close out their scholastic basketball careers. More ... Wins have been hard to come by for the boys' basketball team at Austin. Even an optimist will concede that the situation isn't likely to change this season. Don Ayers has come aboard as the new head coach, succeeding Scott Easton. He's assisted by Joe Glover. More ... There's a new leader in the Tuesday Night Women's League at Mountan View Bowliing Center. The Misfits leap-grogged Just Throw It to take a two-game lead in the standings. Top scores this week came from K. Summers (186- 5060, A. Prosper (179-488), E. Pellam (198-487) and A. Williams (450). More ... Just one starter was lost to graduation from the girls' basketball team at Cameron County High School. Dave Sullivan, former assistant coach, has been elevated to the head coach position vacated by Pat Lewis, who moved on after 25 years at the helm. More ... Pennsylvania's smallest school district should turn out one of the best girls' basketball teams in the region this season. Austin's Panthers open at the West Branch Tournament this weekend and return for back-to-back home games next Tuesday and Thursday against Galeton and Brockway, respectively. More ... There's no rest for many of the athletes who will play prominent roles for the boys' basketball team at Cameron County. They stepped right from the football field onto the basketball court to prepare for Friday night's opener on the road at Johnsonburg. Results weren't available by press time. More ... Coudersport has beefed up its non-league schedule to better prepare the girls for the basketball battles to come. Coach Brian Green has plenty of talent back for this year's run, which could include another Northern Tier League championship and success in the postseason. More ... Cameron County High School wrestling coach Scott Baker welcomed back the school's football players, just in time for the Red Raiders' opener at the Warren Tournament on Saturday, Dec. 8. Junior Mike Baker is coming off a 29-7 season in which he placed fourth in D9. He'll probably wrestle at 171 this year. Dom Manginell, a sophomore, should ably fill the 125 slot. More ... Coudersport High School opens its wrestling season Tuesday night at St. Marys. Sophomore Dirk Cowburn and junior Rich Keagle will lead the Falcons into the 2007- 08 campaign. Last year, Cowburn placed fourth in the state. He followed that over the summer with a national championship in Greco-Roman competition and as a runner-up in Freestyle. More ... Paul Gabor reached perfection during recent Monday Men's Merchant action at Mountain View Bowling Center. He had flirted with a perfect game a week earlier, settling for a 299, but the stars were aligned on Sunday night. His perfecto was part of a 675 set. More ... Just five games separate the top five teams in the Wednesday Night Men's League at Mountain View Bowling Center in Emporium. This week, Scott Lewis led the way with a 627 set (235), while Gene Rebo spilled a 606 (227). More ... Sinnemahoning Sportsmen's Assn. will hold its popular Coyote Hunt Feb. 15-17.
