New eligibility guidelines in heat assistance program

With frigid temperatures forecast for the next several days and two solid months of winter ahead, local coordinators are urging residents to use the state's heating assistance program.

Help is available through the state's Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program for those having trouble paying their heating bills.

Income eligibility guidelines have been extended this year. A family of four with an annual income of up to $30,000 can now qualify. Grants are based on family size, income, type of heating fuel and location.

Payments are sent directly to the utility or fuel dealer, with the money credited to the person's bill. Additional emergency assistance is available to individuals in jeopardy of losing their heat. For more information, call 486- 3757 in Cameron County or 274-4900 in Potter County. Information is also available by calling toll-free 1-866-857- 7095.
