Cowburn (23-0) leading CHS wrestlers

Dirk Cowburn
Coudersport wrestling fans have another chance to see undefeated freshman Dirk Cowburn and his teammates in action Tuesday night, when St. Marys Public comes to town. Junior high bouts start at 6:00, with the varsity match to follow.

Cowburn knocked off another foe Thursday at Kane, improving his record to 23-0 by pinning Dan Milstead in just 72 seconds at 140 lbs.

The Falcons also got wins from sophomore Rich Keagle (11-10 record at 189) and freshman Brandon Empson (119), but came out on the short end of a 45-24 score.

"I was extremely pleased with the hard wrestling I saw tonight," said Coudersport coach Thad Taylor. "Brandon fought a good, tough six minutes for his 3-2 win, while Rich came from way behind and pulled out a huge five-point move in the last 20 seconds to beat a kid who pinned him the last time they met."

"We did well for an eightmember team that sports five freshmen," the coach added.

Talented Johnsonburg came to Coudersport on Wednesday and defeated the Falcons, 57- 16.

Cowburn scored a 9-1 major decision at 140. Keegan DeLung (145) and Keagle (189) were winners by forfeit.

"Johnsonburg is a tough team with some real seasoned kids," said Taylor. "Our guys went after them and will learn from this match."

Last weekend, Cowburn earned the 140-lb. championship against a competitive field at the North East Tournament. Keagle and Kyle Collins each notched a win at 189 and 285, respectively.

"Some of the weight classes were loaded," Taylor noted. "We had some terrific individual efforts."

Cowburn started out with a 41-second pin and then dropped a talented Sam Kuhn of Harborcreek in 3:05 during the quarterfinals. He followed with a dramatic 6-5 overtime win against top-seeded Clint Copeland of Conneaut Lake, then outlasted Sean Lyons of Saegertown, 8-3, in the finals.
