CCSD board takes new angle on principal job

Members of the Cameron County Area School Board will not be hiring a new elementary school principal, despite the presence of at least four certified principal candidates, all women, on the current faculty.

Instead, board members have accepted Acting Superintendent Clyde Moate's recommendation to establish a new position, to be known as dean of students and education affairs.

That way, whoever is hired for that job -- insiders say William Floyd is the likely choice -- will not be required to have principal certification.

Decision to establish the dean position was reached with a dissenting vote from board member Bill Bogart. Another member, Paul Malizia, was not present.

Moate, who is principal at Woodland Elementary School, receives an extra $100 per day as acting superintendent. His interim appointment was recently extended, which could allow him to earn certification by December and be eligible for hiring as full-time superintendent.

Board members have discussed the personnel issues behind closed doors in executive session.

The next public school board meeting will be held on Monday, March 5.
