Canoe races scheduled April 7 Cameron County's Canoe & Kayak Classic has been scheduled for Saturday, April 7. Past events have drawn racers from several states. Organizer Randy Bailey said this year's 33rd annual "Classic" will reflect an expanded effort to attract newcomers to the recreational aspects of canoeing and kayaking, in addition to promoting competition for the seasoned veterans. Bailey has set a goal of 100 entries this year; last year's field was 84. Racers will enter the water about six miles south of Emporium along Route 120 and navigate an 11-mile stretch of scenic waterway in the headwaters of the West Branch of the Susquehanna River. Finish line is at Driftwood. Registration will be held at the Emporium Country Club, near the starting line, from 8:00 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. First racers will shove off at noon. Competition will be held in both recreational and racing classes. Entry fees are $15 for adults and $10 for racers 18 or under. Breakfast will be available at the registration area. Competitors can ride a shuttle bus from Driftwood back to the starting line. The organizers are also planning a poster contest for Woodland Elementary School students, door prizes, and a postrace awards ceremony and spaghetti dinner to be held at the Emporium Firehall. In the event of low water, the competition will be shifted to a closed course at the George B. Stevenson Dam. For more information, contact Randy Bailey at 546-2011.
