Emporium Rotary Club members heard about pandemics during their recent meeting. Guest speaker Dennis Fapore, shown with program chair Georgiann Holly, is district executive director for the Pa. Dept. of Health. He discussed past pandemics such as the 1918 Spanish Flu, the Asian Flu in 1958 and the Hong Kong Flu in 1968. Current concern focuses on the Avian Flu, which is caused by migratory birds. Fapore said that if the Avian Flu strikes in the U.S., the health care system will be stressed. He said people should be prepared to fend for themselves and suggested they prepare emergency kits containing such item as bedding, medications, personal items, food, water and other necessities.
