Coudy girls face Union rematch

Kelly McVay (left) and Hope Morris played key roles in the Falcons' win over Clarion-Limestone.
Coudersport's girls are heading back to familiar territory Saturday afternoon.

They are strangers to neither the venue, Clarion University's Waldo Tippin Gymnasium, nor the situation: a PIAA District 9 Class A basketball title game.

It's Coudersport vs. Union: The Rematch, with opening tipoff at 2:00. Both teams advance into the 32-team state tournament next Saturday.

The winner draws the fourthseeded team from District 6. The loser meets the runner-up from District 10, either Farrell or Eisenhower.

Last year, Union broke the Falcons' string of district titles. This year's Coudersport squad (25-1) has been anxious to avenge that loss for many months.

Union brings a 25-3 record into Saturday's game, led by 5- 7 senior Tiffany Corle, who is averaging more than 17 points per game.

Four Coudersport players scored in double figures Tuesday night in the Falcons 60-54 win over Clarion- Limestone at the Elk County Catholic High School gym in St. Marys.

Senior Hope Morris led Coudersport with 13 points, while Karli Duffee added 12, Kristy Kamper had 11 and Jessica Wilson 10.

Duffee nailed a three-pointer just before the halftime buzzer, staking Coudersport to a 28-26 lead. The Lions roared in the opening minutes of the third quarter, going on top by four points, but Duffee hit another trey and two more baskets.

Leading 43-35 entering the final stanza, the Falcons proceeded to sink 17 foul shots to preserve the win. Kelly McVay was eight-of-eight from the line in the fourth quarter.

"We made the big plays when we had to," said Coudersport coach Brian Green. "Everybody contributed for us. Kelly's foul shots were huge. Karli played real well off the bench. Jessica was huge on the glass at both ends. We also got good defensive efforts from Jordan Bright and Kayla Bohn."
