A wild turkey management plan for the next 10 years has been released by the Pa. Game Commission.
Biologist Mary Jo Casalena said the agency will seek more detailed harvest data and information on survival rates, while emphasizing habitat acquisition and hunter safety.
Among objectives of the plan, which is posted on the PGC website, are: population management; habitat improvement; public education and partnerships to meet the wild turkey management goals.
"Implementing the 47 strategies in this plan will require personnel and budget commitments, yet resources are always limited," Casalena said. "Additional revenue and resources will be needed."
The Pa. Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation supported the process.
Meanwhile, Pennsylvania hunters may apply for a second spring gobbler tag. Fees are $21 for Pennsylvanians and $41 for non-residents. The application period closes on April 1 for the April 28 to May 26 season.
Hunters are able to take one spring gobbler as part of their general hunting privileges. However, the special license will afford hunters the opportunity to take a second spring gobbler.
The Pa. Game Commission will monitor the impact of the bonus turkey tag at the same time it evaluates other possible changes, including the extension of spring gobbler hunting hours beyond noon.
Revenue from the additional license sales will go toward the Game Commission's turkey management plan and turkey hunter education.
