Everyone watches for the arrival of the American Robin in March as the first sign of spring. Experienced bird watchers know, though, that there are many other species to watch for when March begins. One is the red-winged black bird, pictured here. The males arrive first to set up territories and while they spend their summers in fresh-water, swampy areas, the birds are common visitors to bird feeders in the early spring. Males are a glossy black, while the females are brown with white stripes. Their familiar "oak-a-leeeee" is a favorite of birders who await the arrival of spring. This male was visiting a feeder in southern Potter County.
