Bluebirds making comback in state Bluebirds are making a comeback in the region, thanks in large part to the growing number of people who have built nesting boxes for the spe- cies. The bluebird population suffered considerable losses after the introductions of English sparrows and European starlings to America. Further complicating the bluebird's plight has been the loss of open spaces to development or reforestation. Each year, the Pa. Game Commission manufactures and sells about 9,000 bluebird nest boxes. They sell for $7.00 each. Additional information is available at (814) 355-4434. Most bluebirds spend the winter near their nest box and forage on wild fruits and berries. Best time to erect a bluebird box is in March. The earlier a nest box is placed afield or in a yard, the better its chances are of attracting bluebirds. The Game Commission website, pgc.state.pa.us, offers additional information on bluebirds, as well as nest box plans. |
