Lundberg announces closing Something had to give as the opening of Emporium's new Rite Aid Pharmacy and merchandise store drew closer. On Monday, it did. Blair and Linda Lundberg from the family-owned and operated Lundberg Pharmacy and Gifts, announced that their prominent store on Fourth Street will close its doors next month. Pharmacist Blair Lundberg will be going to work for Rite Aid. Lundberg Pharmacy has served the Emporium community for more than 55 years. "This has been the most difficult business decision of our lives," the Lundbergs said in a paid advertisement appearing on page 8 of this edition. "We have poured our heart and soul into making our family business one we can be proud of." "Although our business remains viable today," they added, "pressures and restrictions placed by the insurance companies, the uncertainty of health care's future, and family reasons give us cause to join forces with Rite Aid Pharmacy." Meanwhile, across Fourth Street, Emporium Pharmacy owner June Caldwell said she believes local customers will remain loyal and recognize the advantages a hometown pharmacy has over a chain. "For one thing, we emphasize customer service and confidentiality," she said, pointing out that the pharmacy has a private consultation room where customers can speak oneon one with the pharmacist. Emporium Pharmacy, which already is open on Sundays, plans to expand its hours even more. A spokesman at Emporium's other pharmacy, the Medicine Shoppe, declined to comment. The 11,000 sq. ft. Rite Aid, being built on the former Jubilee Foods/Market Basket lot on East Allegany Avenue, will complement its pharmacy with a grocery section, various retail items, bright lights, ample parking and a drive-up window for prescriptions. The chain has been the death knell for traditional family-owned and operated pharmacies in many communities. |
