School district may tap reserve
Cameron County Board of Education may dip into the district's reserve fund to avoid raising real estate taxes for the 2007-08 school year. A preliminary budget assessment was presented at this month's board meeting.

In its current state, the $11 million budget would have a shorfall of about $300,000 in anticipated revenue. A portion of that could be drawn down from the district's $1.9 millon unreserved fund balance.

The 2007-08 budget contains uncertainties, including estimates on professional salaries. The current teachers' union contract expires on June 30. Contract negotiations are also underway with the support staff. That union is scheduled to vote on a new pact next week.
