Group aiming to revitalize Emporium's downtown

About a dozen area citizens have joined forces to revitalize the downtown business district in Emporium.

Sylvan Heritage Council, formed earlier this year, hopes to eventually expand its efforts throughout the remainder of Cameron County. Neighboring communities, such as Johnsonburg and Ridgway, have used the same formula with success.

"We really want to create a positive image for downtown," said council chair Jeanmare Holjencin. Members have already begun filling some of the town's empty storefronts.

"We think it's important for the town to have a vibrant appearance," said Don Olivett, another active member of Sylvan Heritage Council. He said people coming to the county seat for the Canoe and Kayak Classic, Relay for Life, Autumn Fest and other activities should be left with a positive impression.

Several other projects are in the works. Volunteers plan to clean the caboose along East Allegheny Avenue and replace an American flag at the site. They're also planning to work on the landscape around the "Welcome" area at Emporium's western gateway. Also in the works is a trash pickup for May 5.

Emporium Borough Council members support the plans and have agreed to assist Sylvan Heritage Council.
